I’ve recently enrolled a the Udemy Course about Product Management. Here are my learnings for the first lesson.

In between UX, Tech, and Business

A product manager is the person in between UX, Tech, and Business.

But generally speaking, it is difficult to define. Might be because it is a pretty new position or role? I don’t know.

Googling it gave me different answers.

Product manager responsibilities also change depending on a company. The responsibilities you have on company A might be totally different from your responsibilities with company B.

You are not a manager of anybody

One important thing I’ve learned is that as a product manager, YOU ARE NOT A MANAGER OF ANYBODY and YOU ARE NOT THE BOSS OF ANYBODY

When I first heard of this, it was tough to digest, but it was mentioned that it was by design. If you are a boss of an engineer, they won’t disagree with what you are saying.

As a product manager, you want everyone to be honest with you and give you honest feedback, especially if it is about the product that you are building.

Act as an enabler

A product manager act as an enabler to the different components of the company, especially for the engineers and designers.

A product manager communicates with different stakeholders to receive feedback to decide which things to be built next, and which of those things are most important.
